Martin Parr: A Satirical View of the World

Martin Parr, born in Epsom, England in 1952, is a photojournalist known for his lighthearted, sometimes satirical, photos. Martin's grandfather, George Parr, a layman photographer, motivated Martin to become a photographer after noticing that he was interested in photography as well. Parr attended Manchester Polytechnic from 1970 to 1973, where he studied photography. After graduating, he worked at Manchester Council for three months before beginning his first exhibition, Home Sweet Home.

This photo is from his photobook The Last Resort, a collection of photographs from 1983-1985, and his first work in color. After seeing the impact that was made by photographers using color in the U.S. Martin decided that he would start shooting in color, as well. Martin is known for the loud colors in his photos.

A few of his works are displayed in The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin. None of Parr's photos are Photoshopped. His expert use of the flash allows him to get these pictures with incredibly high saturation.

In 1994, Parr became a full member at Magnum Photographic Cooperative, a difficult process, requiring at least four years of patience. First, you must apply for and be accepted as a Nominee Member, followed by applying for Associate Membership, a role that is only possible after being a Nominee for two years and submitting a new portfolio. After two more years, you are able to apply for full membership, when the current full members of Magnum choose one person to become a new full member. that can be considered one of the highest honors in a photographer's career. Parr was the president of Magnum Photos from 2013 to 2017.

He has edited 30 books and published more than 100 with his photos. He has won many awards for his work; the Erich Salomon Prize in 2006 because of his contribution to contemporary photography, and the Sony World Photography Award for Outstanding Contribution to Photography in 2017.
